On Saturday morning at the Teen Vogue Summit and Block Party in Los Angeles, Hayley Kiyoko used some of her time on the stage to advocate for reproductive rights and other pressing civil issues.
“The past couple years have just been so incredibly challenging for everyone,” Kiyoko said. “Even today, we’re still fighting for civil and reproductive rights.”
Her comments were relevant amid a critical moment for Roe v. Wade, as the Supreme Court is expected to deliver a ruling on whether a law banning most abortions after 15 weeks in Mississippi is constitutional. Reproductive freedom is posed to be a defining issue leading up to the 2022 midterm elections.
The Japanese-American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress opened the summit with motivational words and a vocal performance. Before launching a fruitful music career, Kiyoko rose to fame with roles in Disney’s Lemonade Mouth and two live-action Scooby Doo films, plus appearances in multiple Disney Channel shows.
“I just want to remind you all to stay compassionate as much as you can, to care for others, and use your voice to help protect, and use your votes to help protect women’s rights,” Kiyoko said.
